Becker wrote ‘the township consists at present of one hotel, one store, a kitchen, and two native huts’

The town of Menindee on the banks of the Darling River in far west of New South Wales, now has a population of around 680 people.

At Menindee the Burke and Wills Expedition was divided. Ludwig Becker remained at Menindee for three months with the supply party and most of the supplies while Burke and Wills continued on to Coopers Creek and then to the Gulf.
