About the organisation

The Italian Historical Society was established by Sir James Gobbo in 1981 with the mission to collect, preserve and share the history and culture of Italian Australians. Over the years, the Society has organised several exhibitions in collaboration with the State Library of Victoria and other institutions. Its publications include the Italian Historical Society Journal (1989-). The Museo Italiano, opened in 2010 as part of the Victorian Government’s Cultural Precinct’s Enhancement Project, showcases the collection of the Italian Historical Society and runs an active program of cultural events. The Italian Historical Society and Museo Italiano are located symbolically in the heart of Italian Carlton. They are part of the cultural branch of Co.As.It., the official welfare agency for the Italian community in Victoria.
